Title Loans in Indiana

In a Nutshell: Car Title Loans in Indiana

Title loans are legal in Indiana and are regulated by the Indiana Department of Financial Institutions (DFI). They are made under the supervised loan provisions of the Indiana Uniform Consumer Credit Code, which was recodified on 1 July 2026 as Title 37, Article 2.

Indiana caps the price. Under IC 37-2-4-35 the finance charge may not exceed the greater of two limits: a tiered rate of 36% a year on unpaid balances up to $2,600, 21% on the part between $2,600 and $5,200, and 15% on the part above $5,200 — or a flat 25% a year on the unpaid balance.

Because the tiers apply to the unpaid balance, these are installment loans that you pay down over time, not single-payment balloon loans. You can pay off early at any time without a penalty.

What a Title Loan Costs in Indiana

The table below shows a 12-month installment loan at Indiana's maximum permitted finance charge. These are the statutory ceiling, not a quote — your own agreement will show your exact rate and total.

The figures are interest only. A nonrefundable prepaid finance charge of up to $75, $150 or $200 (by loan size) may be added on top, and must appear in your written disclosure.

Loan amount Term APR Finance charge Total repaid
$1,000 12 months 36.0% $206 $1,206
$3,000 12 months 35.5% $608 $3,608

Consumer Protections in Indiana

Every Indiana title lender must hold a licence from the Department of Financial Institutions, and you can check one before you borrow on the Indiana Department of Financial Institutions licence search.

Under the federal Truth in Lending Act the lender must give you the APR and the total cost in writing before you sign. You can repay in full at any time with no prepayment penalty, a returned-payment charge is capped at $25, and you cannot be criminally prosecuted over an unpaid title loan. Complaints go to the Indiana Department of Financial Institutions.

Borrowing Responsibly in Indiana

Before you sign, be clear on the payment, the number of payments, and the total you will have paid when the schedule ends. The figures in your own agreement are the ones that count, not the examples on any website — ours included.

Other Options Worth Comparing

A title loan is one way to cover a shortfall, and it is worth putting it next to a few alternatives before you commit your car's title. A credit union small-dollar loan, a payment plan negotiated directly with the biller, a paycheck advance from your employer, or help from a local assistance programme will often cost less. If none of those work, borrow the smallest amount that solves the problem and pay it off as quickly as your budget allows.

Keep your vehicle in the picture too. The title is the security, so a loan you cannot repay puts the car you rely on at risk — and in most cases that car is worth considerably more than the loan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to help you feel confident about title loans.

What is the maximum interest rate on a title loan in Indiana?

Indiana caps the finance charge at the greater of a tiered rate — 36% a year on unpaid balances up to $2,600, 21% from $2,600 to $5,200 and 15% above $5,200 — or 25% a year on the unpaid balance, under IC 37-2-4-35.

Are there fees on top of the interest?

A one-time nonrefundable prepaid finance charge is allowed, capped at $75 for loans of $2,000 or less, $150 from $2,000 to $4,000 and $200 above $4,000. A late fee of up to $25 and a returned-payment charge of up to $25 may also apply.

Do I repay in one lump sum?

No. Precomputed supervised loans are prohibited in Indiana, so a title loan is paid down in installments and the finance charge runs on the unpaid balance.

Can I pay my Indiana title loan off early?

Yes. Indiana does not allow a prepayment penalty, so you can repay the full balance at any time and stop further finance charges from accruing.

Can I refinance my title loan?

Yes, refinancing and consolidation are permitted. If the same lender refinances you within 3 months, it cannot add a new nonrefundable prepaid finance charge, and it can charge no more than two of them in any 12 months.

How do I check that a lender is licensed in Indiana?

Search the Indiana Department of Financial Institutions licence search. Every Indiana title lender must hold a supervised lender licence, and complaints are handled by the same department.
